UNIVERSITY OF THE STREETS – BELMONT AVE.

bulildingAfter 46 years of successful music and arts programing, University of the Streets (UOTS) will close the doors of its Lower East Side facility in Manhattan on April 30, 2015, and open a new campus in the Bronx, NY. This new location will allow UOTS to bring their rich legacy of cultural enrichment to the Bronx, thereby empowering its residents to nurture and expand their artistic talent in a high energy and diverse world class atmosphere.Y.E.S. (Youth Encouragement Society) is an outgrowth of UOTS’ rich history of educational and philanthropic community service. The launch of this new initiative coincides with UOTS’ move to the new headquarters at 2381 Belmont Avenue, Bronx, NY 10458.Activities will vary from photography, dance, music and martial arts to Hip Hop/Jazz cultural arts and history. In addition, the program will host daily skills development workshops. UOTS also provides visitors with access to a computer room, a game room and a recreation room open daily during and after school hours. Video games, air hockey, table tennis, pool table and musical instruments are also accessible to visitors.

At the new facility on Belmont Ave., visitors are encouraged to attend “Movie Thursdays”, which will include a variety of historical, educational/cultural and contemporary selection of movies.  Ongoing counseling and crisis management will always be provided.

“Y.E.S. staff members, who come from similar environments as our target constituency, truly understand the trials and tribulations of today’s adolescence experience. Y.E.S. is a program designed to foster positive outcomes for those whom choose to make a change for the better. Doors are open to provide a safe haven for all who take a step forward to succeed and fulfill their own personal aspirations”.

The University of the Streets has a 46-year proven track record of successful programming, and the organization is looking forward to continuing this tradition in the Bronx. Y.E.S. is just one of many new initiatives that will launch at the new campus.

UOTS welcomes all to join them for their grand opening celebration on Friday, May 15th from 7 – 10 pm.  Participating artists include, Bernard Linnette and Dave Schumacher with featured vocalist Jazzmeia Horn and bassist Rob Anderson. Cheryl-Martin Anderson on piano, Ira Atkins on drums and jazz photo exhibit by Omar Kharem .  (Regular Friday & Saturday Night Jam Sessions will resume at 9:00 pm on May 16th).
