BENEFIT CONCERT IN SUPPORT OF FLOBEL ADVISOR PERI SHAW
On Sunday December 2nd, FLOBEL Advisors, friends and guests will gather in New York to raise funds on behalf of Peri Shaw. In the Fall of 2017 Peri was experiencing inexplicable symptoms of illness. She spent countless days battling chronic fatigue, joint inflammation, digestive issues, sleep deprivation, colds and flus. To her surprise, a mold test of her rent-stabilized studio apartment on East 16th Street revealed high levels of mold in the air, mold growth in her walls, ceiling, bathroom and other areas of the apartment. In an effort to assist Peri in her ongoing recovery, the Florence Belsky Charitable Foundation is hosting a benefit concert featuring entertainment from new and old FLOBEL Advisors. Nectar News sat down with friend of Peri Shaw, John Petersen to learn more about Peri’s story and the upcoming event.
JP: Peri’s ordeal was pretty severe. Unbeknownst to everyone at the time, she was physically feeling things that she couldn’t put her finger on. For example, experiencing longer time periods where she couldn’t get rid of a cold or a flu, lack of energy and overall fatigue. Finally her doctor decided to run some mold tests. When the tests came back, they were off the charts. Our most immediate concern is her health, and we knew upon the diagnosis that she had to get out of the apartment. With that priority in mind, we formed an initiative to raise funds on her behalf beginning with a GoFundMe Campaign and the upcoming benefit concert.
NN: Can you tell us more about the team that has formed to help Peri as she navigates the ups and downs of her recovery and the ongoing legal issues with her apartment?
JP: Peri and I have been great friends for over 25 years now. Keni Fine is a good friend as well. So together we began to talk about how we could get lawyers involved in the form of a personal injury case or a landlord and tenant case. Dan Schneider, with his knowledge of Peri’s situation and his law expertise got involved soon after and we formed, “Team Peri”. Peri, not being able to work, has no income but the rent bills still keep coming in. The landlord is taking no responsibility for amending any of Peri’s rental fees nor are they taking any responsibility for the mold and all of its accompanying issues. So together, we’ve been strategizing on how to tackle her situation legally and financially.
NN: Aside from the GoFundme is there anything that you want the FLOBEL network to know about Peri?
JP: I think the benefit concert is a wonderful opportunity to help out. You can donate whatever you can, a little bit of money goes a long way. Peri has done so much work for other people and the Foundation.
Peri is selfless when it comes to service and volunteerism. She gives the most amazing advice, she is one of the best listeners and one of the most compassionate people I know. She has fundraised for so many other organizations and causes that it’s only appropriate that she start to get some of that back. Peri is not keen on asking for help and being a burden to anyone and never in my existence have I met anyone so full of love.

When I heard of plans to collectively organize on her behalf, it immediately rang true, nobody deserves to benefit more from a Benefit than Peri Shaw. In raising awareness and support for her, we in turn elevate ourselves, and in that only good things will come. – Dr. Yahvey Hoffman
